Robert FitzRoy, caricature
Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865). Caricature of the British meteorologist and Royal Navy vice-admiral, Robert FitzRoy, showing him with a large nose and ears. FitzRoy is best known for captaining the HMS Beagle during its famous voyage on which Charles Darwin was a passenger. FitzRoy did a great deal of scientific work himself, in geographical surveying, navigation, astronomy and chronometric measurement. After serving as Governor of New Zealand from 1843-5, he developed an interest in meteorology and pioneered accurate weather-forecasting. His methods were controversial among his peers, and the challenges of establishing a weather service led to his depression and eventual suicide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a comical caricature of Robert FitzRoy, the renowned British meteorologist and Royal Navy vice-admiral. With exaggerated features like a large nose and ears, this illustration adds a touch of humor to his distinguished persona. FitzRoy's fame stems from his role as the captain of HMS Beagle during its iconic voyage alongside Charles Darwin. However, his contributions extend far beyond that as he made significant scientific advancements in various fields such as geographical surveying, navigation, astronomy, and chronometric measurement. After serving as Governor of New Zealand from 1843-5, FitzRoy developed an intense interest in meteorology and became a pioneer in accurate weather forecasting. Although his methods were met with controversy among fellow scientists at the time, they laid the foundation for modern meteorological practices. Unfortunately, the challenges he faced while establishing a weather service took a toll on him emotionally, leading to depression and ultimately suicide. This monochrome artwork captures both the historical significance and comedic aspect of FitzRoy's life. It serves as a reminder of his remarkable achievements within the realm of science and exploration while shedding light on the personal struggles he endured throughout his career. As we admire this portrait today, it allows us to reflect upon how far we have come in our understanding of weather patterns thanks to pioneers like Robert FitzRoy.
