Shame-faced crab

Shame-faced crab (Calappa calappa). This crab lives at a depth of 10-50 metres in the Indo-Pacific regions. Shame-faced crabs are so-named due to the way the crabs chelae (claws) fold up and cover its face (seen here), as if it were hiding its face in shame. The joints that allow the claws to do this bear a strong resemblance to barrel hinges used on doors etc. The carapace (shell) of this specimen measures 12cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the unique Shame-faced crab, also known as Calappa calappa. Found in the Indo-Pacific regions at depths of 10-50 meters, these intriguing creatures get their name from their peculiar behavior. As seen in this image, the crab's chelae or claws fold up and cover its face, resembling a gesture of shame or hiding. Interestingly, the joints that enable this action bear a striking resemblance to barrel hinges commonly used on doors. The black background beautifully contrasts with the intricate details of this animal's carapace or shell, measuring an impressive 12cm wide. This close-up frontal view allows us to appreciate its anatomy and biology while highlighting its distinctive features such as the claw-like pincers. As an arthropod belonging to the crustacean family, this marine species falls under the fascinating realm of invertebrates. Its exoskeleton made primarily of calcium carbonate provides protection and support for its delicate body structure. Photographer Â" from Science Photo Library has skillfully captured this solitary specimen against a clean cut-out backdrop, emphasizing its natural beauty without any distractions. This stunning image is not only visually appealing but also serves as a valuable resource for those interested in carcinology (the study of crustaceans) and marine biology.
