Simpson researching anaesthetics, 1840s

Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), Scottish doctor. This historical artwork shows Simpsons butler walking in on Simpson, who is suffering from the effects of a recent experiment. Simpson was passionate about alleviating pain, and always experimented with new anaesthetic agents, often on himself. He was the first person to use ether during childbirth on 19th January 1847 and in November 1847 he discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform. Opponents claimed that a painful labour was a biological and religious necessity, but the clamour died down in 1853 after Queen Victoria used chloroform during childbirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the pioneering spirit of Sir James Young Simpson, a Scottish doctor who revolutionized the field of anaesthetics in the 19th century. In this scene, we witness Simpson's relentless dedication to alleviating pain as he experiments with new anaesthetic agents, even subjecting himself to their effects. The concerned expression on his butler's face hints at the dangerous nature of these endeavors. Simpson's groundbreaking achievements are highlighted in this image - from being the first person to use ether during childbirth in January 1847 to discovering the anaesthetic properties of chloroform later that year. Despite facing opposition from those who believed painful labor was a biological and religious necessity, Simpson persisted in his mission. The impact of his work reached its pinnacle when Queen Victoria herself used chloroform during childbirth in 1853, silencing many critics and solidifying Simpson's legacy. This artwork serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment and significant contributions to medical history. As we gaze upon this illustration, we are transported back to an era where scientific exploration often came at great personal risk. It reminds us of how far medicine has come and pays homage to one man's determination that forever changed obstetrics and anesthesia.
