Orion nebula (M42)

Orion nebula (M42), optical image. This is a huge starbirth region, where gas is coalescing to form new stars. Radiation from the hot young stars ionises the gases in the nebula, causing it to emit light. The emitting gases have been colour- coded: sulphur (red), hydrogen (green) and oxygen (blue). The stars powering this nebula are a tight cluster called the Trapezium, which occupies the blue area at upper centre. At top, separated from M42 by a dark lane of dust, is the related nebula M43. These nebulae lie around 1600 light years from Earth in the constellation Orion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Orion Nebula (M42), a celestial wonder that serves as a colossal starbirth region. Within this vast expanse, gas molecules are merging together to give birth to new stars, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. The intense radiation emitted by these young and hot stars ionizes the surrounding gases within the nebula, causing them to emit vibrant light. To enhance our understanding of this cosmic masterpiece, scientists have color-coded the emitting gases in this optical image. Sulphur appears in striking red hues, hydrogen glows with a mesmerizing green tone, and oxygen emanates a soothing blue aura. At the upper center lies a tight cluster of stars known as the Trapezium - their luminosity powers this entire nebula. Separated from M42 by a dark lane of dust is another related nebula called M43 which adds further intrigue to this already breathtaking scene. These magnificent nebulae reside approximately 1600 light years away from Earth within the constellation Orion. Captured through space telescopes in 2003 by Science Photo Library, this extraordinary photograph invites us into an ethereal realm where stellar formation takes place amidst swirling clouds of gas and dust. It serves as a reminder of our ever-evolving universe and ignites curiosity about its vastness and mysteries yet to be unraveled.
