Wilhelm Ostwald, German physical chemist C016 / 8861

Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1933), German physical chemist. Ostwald is considered one of the founders of modern physical chemistry. He was instrumental in identifying the proper action of catalysts. He stated that although the overall energy change of a reaction remained unaltered, the catalyst lowered the activation energy. This concept made catalysis useful in industry, and is the view still held today. As a result, Ostwald was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He spent the rest of his life studying thermodynamics, colour theory and the philosophy of science. This photograph, dating from the period before 1906, was published in 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Wilhelm Ostwald, a prominent German physical chemist who played a significant role in shaping modern physical chemistry. Known as one of the founders of this field, Ostwald's groundbreaking work focused on catalysts and their impact on chemical reactions. He discovered that while the overall energy change in a reaction remained constant, catalysts could lower the activation energy required for the reaction to occur. This revolutionary concept revolutionized industrial catalysis and remains widely accepted today. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science, Ostwald was honored with the prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1909. However, his scientific pursuits did not end there. Throughout his life, he delved into various areas such as thermodynamics, color theory, and even philosophy of science. Dating back to before 1906 and published in 1905, this portrait captures Ostwald's intellectual prowess and determination. With its monochrome aesthetic highlighting his distinguished features against a plain background, it offers us a glimpse into the world of an influential figure from the late 19th century. Preserved by MIRIAM AND IRA D. WALLACH DIVISION OF ART PRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS/NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY/ SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY collection, this image serves as both a historical artifact and an inspiration for aspiring scientists worldwide who continue to build upon Ostwald's theories and advancements in physical chemistry.
