Yakovlev Yak-9s in formation. The Yak-9 was a single seat, single engined fighter aircraft used by the Soviet Air Force during World War 2. Powered by a Klimov M-105 piston engine of 880kW (1180hp), it could reach 591 km/h (367mph) and was armed with a 12.7mm machine gun and a 20mm cannon. The Yak-9 proved to be an excellent dogfighter at low level and was used as a ground attack aircraft as well as a fighter. The prototype flew in summer 1941 and entered service in October of the same year. It remained in production until 1948 with over 16, 700 aircraft being built, including those ex(ported to nine foreign air forces
