Louis Armstrong in Milan 1949
A picture taken 26 October 1949 in Milan shows American Louis Armstrong, the jazz trumpeter whose melodic inventiveness established the central role of the improvising soloist in jazz. Armstrong always said he was born 04 July 1900 in New Orleans although nobody knows the exact date. He was also a popular singer (hit recording include " Mack the Knife", " Hello Dolly!" ) and entertainer in such films as " Pennies from Heaven" (1936), " Cabin in the Sky" (1943), and " High Society" (1956), but he remained primarily a jazz musician, touring the world with his New Orleans-style sextet. Armstrong died 06 July 1971. / AFP PHOTO / INTERCONTINENTALE / STF

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Louis Armstrong during his visit to Milan in 1949. Known for revolutionizing jazz with his melodic inventiveness, Armstrong's improvising soloist style became the cornerstone of the genre. Despite uncertainty surrounding his birth date, he always claimed July 4th, 1900 as his day of birth in New Orleans. Beyond being a groundbreaking trumpeter, Armstrong also found success as a popular singer and entertainer. His hit recordings such as "Mack the Knife" and "Hello Dolly!" showcased his versatile talent. Additionally, he graced the silver screen in films like "Pennies from Heaven" "Cabin in the Sky" and "High Society". However, it was clear that Armstrong's true passion remained rooted in jazz music. Touring worldwide with his New Orleans-style sextet, this influential musician brought joy to audiences across continents. The vertical composition of this image emphasizes both Armstrong's musical prowess and confident attitude. Clad in stylish attire befitting a jazz icon, he holds his trumpet with an air of mastery. Louis Armstrong left an indelible mark on music history before passing away on July 6th, 1971. This AFP photograph by STF beautifully encapsulates not only the essence of this extraordinary musician but also pays homage to an era defined by its soulful melodies and vibrant improvisation techniques.
