Harry Whittier Frees (1879 - 1953) was an American photographer who photographed live animals dressed and posed in human situations with props. His animal photos were featured on post cards, calendars, books, advertising materials, and articles for "Woman's World" and "Child Life" magazines. In addition, he wrote the stories to accompany his pictures for the books and magazines He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1879, after which his family moved to Oaks, Pennsylvania, where he did his famous works. On the choice of cats for his photos Frees states in in his book Animal Land on the Air: "Rabbits are the easiest to photograph in costume, but incapable of taking many human parts. Puppies are tractable when rightly understood, but the kitten is the most versatile animal actor, and possesses the greatest variety of appeal. The pig is the most difficult to deal with, but effective on occasion." In the 1940s, he moved to Florida, where he battled cancer, but ended up committing suicide in 1953. Swinging - A Whimsical Glimpse into Harry Whittier Frees' Animal Kingdom

EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step into the enchanting world of Harry Whittier Frees, where kittens don clothes and frolic on a swing. This photograph, entitled "Swinging" captures the essence of Frees' unique talent for capturing live animals in human-like scenarios. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1879, Frees became renowned for his photographs featuring animals dressed and posed in human situations with props. His work adorned postcards, calendars, books, advertising materials, as well as graced the pages of esteemed publications like "Woman's World" and "Child Life" magazines. Frees had an uncanny ability to bring out the personalities of his animal subjects through careful staging and costumes. In his book Animal Land on the Air, he expressed a fondness for cats due to their versatility and wide-ranging appeal as actors. He believed that rabbits were easiest to photograph in costume but limited when it came to portraying human roles. Puppies were tractable but lacked the same range as kittens. In this particular image captured by Frees on June 24th, 1914 - two adorable kittens clad in miniature outfits find joy upon a swing. Their expressions convey pure delight while their tiny paws grip onto the ropes with utmost determination. Tragically battling cancer later in life, Frees relocated to Florida during the 1940s before ultimately succumbing to despair and taking his own life in 1953. Today we cherish these glimpses into Frees' whimsical animal kingdom—a testament to his unparalleled creativity and dedication. As we admire this charming print from Alamy's collection without commercial intent or mention thereof—let us be transported back over a century ago when two feline friends found happiness swinging amidst a world crafted by one extraordinary photographer's imagination.
