EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two US Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk Multi-Mission Helicopters preparing to take off from Kandahar Airfield in 2011. The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, a remarkable four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, is the epitome of versatility and reliability. While its primary mission is troop transportation and logistical support, this formidable aircraft can be configured for various other critical tasks such as medical evacuation, command-and-control operations, search-and-rescue missions, armed escort duties, electronic warfare activities, and even executive transport. Kandahar Airfield served as a vital hub for combat operations conducted by the RAF between 2001 and 2014. A significant portion of the airfield was known as RAF Kandahar and hosted aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF), Fleet Air Arm (FAA), and Army Air Corps (AAC). It played a pivotal role in facilitating the "Air Bridge" that connected RAF Brize Norton in the UK to Kandahar. Situated approximately ten miles southeast of Kandahar city in Afghanistan, Kandahar International Airport—initially named—stands not only as the country's second international airport but also one of its largest military bases with ample space to accommodate over two hundred military aircraft. This strategic location made it an ideal base for all ISAF airborne forces during their operations. The photograph captures both the power and significance of these iconic helicopters against the backdrop of an airfield that witnessed countless heroic endeavors during its active years.
