EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lake, Wind River Range, c. 1837" by Alfred Jacob Miller takes us back to the untamed beauty of the American West in the 19th century. The artwork depicts a panoramic view of a serene lake nestled amidst the majestic Rocky Mountains. The artist's skillful use of pencil, watercolor, and gouache brings to life the vibrant colors and textures of this breathtaking landscape. In this scene, we witness a group of explorers on horseback traversing through the rugged terrain. Miller himself accompanied Sir William Drummond Stewart and Thomas Fitzpatrick on their expedition along the Oregon Trail in 1837. This journey took them through what is now Wyoming's Wind River Valley, where they encountered Native American tribes and witnessed firsthand the last fur trappers rendezvous. The painting not only captures nature's grandeur but also provides glimpses into Native American culture and early frontier life. It serves as a testament to exploration, discovery, and trade during this transformative period in American history. As we gaze upon this artwork today at Joslyn Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, we are reminded of our country's rich geographical heritage and its deep connection with native peoples. Miller's masterpiece invites us to appreciate both the vastness of nature and our own place within it.
