EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Mme Darsonval's fashion creation, Paris, 1897-99. The garment, made from a combination of wool, silk, and lace, is a true testament to the elegance and sophistication of French style during the late 19th century. The attention to detail in this piece is truly remarkable. The grey wool and silk poplin fabric is lined with delicate pink corded silk throughout. The bodice features a pleated grey silk frill edged with creamy lace that crosses over the left front and fastens at the center. A high standing collar adds an air of refinement while stiffened epaulettes provide structure. The skirt opens at the center back with pleats that fasten together discreetly. A waistband trimmed with gathered bows on either side accentuates the feminine silhouette. Chiffon roses delicately adorn the right side seam, adding a touch of whimsy. A printed label on the waistband reveals that this stunning creation was crafted by Mme Darsonval herself at her boutique located at 17 Rue Chanez in Paris. Displayed proudly at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this photograph captures not only a beautiful piece of fashion history but also pays homage to Mme Darsonval's skill as an esteemed designer during her time.
