When Caesar invaded Britain he found the southern tribes possessed horses, which pulled their scythe-wheeled chariots, but the creatures were unshod, and it is supposed William the Conqueror introduced horse-shoes. As the superstition predates Norman times, it is thought the connection is with a crescent shape worn by the Romans, with horns upturned, to ward off danger from witchcraft. Evil was supposed to travel in circles and when it reached the ends of the upturned horns it was frustrated, but if the horns were pointed downwards, it could drop to earth and find a victim.
