In 1692 Russell commanded the Anglo-Dutch fleet at the five-day Battle of Barfleur and the destruction of the French fleet at La Hogue following the action, thus halting Louis IV's invasion plans (see scenes of the battle: BHC0331, BHC0337 and BHC0338). Russell is shown wearing a grey velvet coat with gold embroidered button holes, and a brown full-bottomed wig. His right hand rests on a globe on the left, his finger indicating the north French coast. To the right on a table is a letter inscribed To the Right Honourable the Earle of Orford'.
