EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate and mystical depiction of Perseus and Caput Medusae, dating back to around 1825. Created by Sidney Hall as part of a set of thirty-two constellation cards known as 'Urania's Mirror', this piece showcases the celestial map for the latitude of London, accompanied by a chart of the heavens designed by Jehoshaphat Aspin. The image portrays Perseus, a legendary figure from Greek mythology, holding the head of Medusa, whose gaze turned onlookers into stone. The detailed illustration highlights the vibrant colors and symbolic elements that make up this mythological scene. These constellation cards were not only visually appealing but also served an educational purpose in domestic settings during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Sold alongside Aspin's 'Familiar Treatise on Astronomy', they reflected a growing interest in improving pastimes and astronomy among society at that time. As we admire this historical artwork today, we are transported back to a time when astronomy was both fascinating and enchanting. The combination of artistry and scientific knowledge in this print truly makes it a timeless piece worth treasuring.
