The Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798, 1801 (oil painting)

7337690 The Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798, 1801 (oil painting) by Luny, Thomas (1759-1837); 90.2x151.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Thomas Luny
An important naval engagement during the French Revolutionary War, 1793-1802. On 19 May 1798, Napoleon sailed from Toulon on his hazardous adventure to Egypt, capturing Malta en route. On realizing this, Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson initially looked for the French at Alexandria, but when he did not find them he sailed back to Syracuse in Sicily to reposition before returning to Alexandria. There, on 1 August, he received a signal that the French fleet had been sighted anchored in Aboukir Bay, 15 miles east of Alexandria. Thence Nelson headed, appearing off Aboukir Island at 17.30. Despite the failing daylight, his ships immediately attacked the head of the unprepared French fleet at anchor, commanded by Admiral Brueys.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting by Thomas Luny captures the intensity and drama of The Battle of the Nile, a pivotal naval engagement during the French Revolutionary War. The scene depicts Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson's daring attack on the anchored French fleet in Aboukir Bay on 1 August 1798. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt had put British interests at risk, prompting Nelson to track down and engage with the enemy. After a series of strategic maneuvers, he finally located the French fleet and wasted no time in launching his assault under fading daylight. The painting beautifully conveys the chaos and ferocity of battle, with ships firing cannons and billowing smoke filling the air. The tension is palpable as both sides fight for control of the sea. Luny's attention to detail brings this historic moment to life, from the intricate rigging of each ship to the determination etched on every sailor's face. It serves as a powerful reminder of Nelson's tactical brilliance and unwavering courage in securing a decisive victory for Britain. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this masterpiece is not just a work of art but also a testament to heroism and sacrifice on both sides of one of history's most significant naval battles.
