The temples most recognizable feature is its circular footprint. Since the worship of Vesta began in private homes, the architecture seems to be a reminder of its history. The extant temple used Greek architecture with Corinthian columns, marble, and a central cella. The remaining structure indicates that there were twenty Corinthian columns built on a podium fifteen meters in diameter. The roof probably had a vent at the apex to allow smoke release.); Reproduced by permission of Chatsworth Settlement Trustees; Flemish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Temple of Vesta in the Forum Boarium, seen from the North, the Tiber to the right". Created by Sebastian Vrancx in 1650 using pen and ink with wash on paper, this artwork measures 27.3x42.2 cm and is part of The Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth. The Temple of Vesta, also known as Aedes Vestae or Tempio di Vesta in Italian, is an ancient structure located in Rome's Roman Forum near the Regia and the House of the Vestal Virgins. Its most distinctive feature is its circular footprint which serves as a reminder of its historical origins when worshiping Vesta took place within private homes. Built with Greek architecture influences, this temple boasts Corinthian columns made from marble surrounding a central cella. The remaining structure indicates that there were once twenty Corinthian columns standing on a fifteen-meter diameter podium. It is believed that there was likely a vent at the apex of the roof to allow smoke release during religious ceremonies. This remarkable image offers viewers a glimpse into ancient Roman history and architectural marvels. With its intricate details and expert use of pen and ink with wash technique, it transports us back to a time when temples like these played significant roles in religious practices and cultural traditions.
