Tureen-on-stand, c. 1775 (porcelain, enamel & gilt)
1069565 Tureen-on-stand, c.1775 (porcelain, enamel & gilt) by Chinese School (18th century); 33.7x36.5x40.6 cm; Dallas Museum of Art, Texas, USA; (add.info.: This tureen on a stand was modeled after a European prototype. Although the actual model sent to China could have been made of pottery, wax, wood, or pewter, the ultimate inspiration was likely a French silver tureen in the late rococo taste. During the third quarter of the 18th century, French silversmiths produced many tureens featuring elaborate finials, handles, and feet. The fluted top and sides are also suggestive of metal examples in the emerging neoclassical taste. A date of 1775 for the manufacture of this porcelain example is indicated by the fact that a tureen of the same form was part of the Royal Swedish Gripsholm Service given in 1775 to King Gustav III by the Swedish East India Company.
Even though tureens of this model must have been expensive because of the large amount of labor required to produce porcelain of such complexity, they were popular among Europes wealthy, and examples with various decorative schemes are known. The Dallas version features neoclassical-style garlands and sprigs of flowers similar to painting found on contemporary French porcelain made at the SAvres factory, but the masks on the scrolled handles relate more closely to earlier work done at Meissen, Germany.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Tureen-on-stand, dating back to around 1775. Crafted with porcelain, enamel, and gilt, this exquisite piece is housed in the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, USA. The tureen's design draws inspiration from European prototypes, particularly a French silver tureen from the late rococo era. French silversmiths during the 18th century created elaborate tureens featuring intricate finials, handles, and feet. The fluted top and sides of this porcelain example also reflect the emerging neoclassical taste. Its manufacture date of 1775 is supported by its resemblance to a tureen that was part of the Royal Swedish Gripsholm Service gifted to King Gustav III by the Swedish East India Company. Despite being labor-intensive and expensive to produce due to its complexity, these tureens were highly sought after among Europe's affluent class. Various decorative schemes were employed on different examples. The Dallas version boasts neoclassical-style garlands and sprigs of flowers reminiscent of contemporary French porcelain made at Sèvres factory. However, it also features scrolled handles adorned with masks that harken back to earlier work done at Meissen in Germany. This remarkable piece from The Wendy and Emery Reves Collection offers an intriguing blend of influences from both France and Germany while showcasing exceptional craftsmanship in porcelain artistry during the 18th century.
