This print showcases the majestic "Golden Spur Guernsey: the China Trade clipper" sailing through the vast seas, proudly flying the Chinese flag for protection. Painted by an unknown artist in the 19th century, this oil on canvas masterpiece measures 45.7x58.4 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The Golden Spur was a remarkable vessel constructed by Peter Ogier of St Sampson, Guernsey for G. F Carrington and Co. On October 15th, it was launched with great fanfare by Miss Ellen Rougier. At an impressive length of 200 feet and weighing 656 tons, it became the largest ship ever to be launched from the island at that time. Notably, this illustrious clipper holds a significant record of completing a voyage from Cardiff to Hong Kong in just 60 days during 1872. It symbolizes both strength and speed as it gracefully sails across oceans. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the Golden Spur met its demise on Haiphong Bar near Hong Kong in March 1879 after being wrecked. Despite its untimely end, this painting immortalizes its glory forever.
