The Taking of the Guns, 1914 (engraving, coloured)

5920229 The Taking of the Guns, 1914 (engraving, coloured) by Woodville, Richard Caton II (1856-1927) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Taking of the Guns, 1914.
Coloured engraving after Richard Caton Woodville, published by the A Illustrated London NewsA, 1914.
Captain Francis Grenfell led the 9th (QueenAs Royal) Lancers in the action at Audregnies, on 24 August 1914 during the Battle of Mons, against a large body of German infantry who were advancing to encircle the 5th Division. This action was later compared to the Charge of the Light Brigade since it demonstrated great bravery but accomplished little. Later in the day Grenfell and his men helped to drag away British guns which were in danger of being captured. In this painting, the artist appears to have combined the two events.
Although not the first action of World War One (1914-1918) for which the Victoria Cross was awarded, Grenfell was the first to be gazetted, that is, officially listed in The London Gazette as a recipient. The citation was for A gallantry in action against unbroken infantry at Audregnies... and for gallant conduct in assisting to save the guns of the 119th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, near Doubon the same dayA. Grenfell was killed in action at Hooghe near Ypres on 24 May 1915.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

The Taking of the Guns, 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that depicts a significant moment in history during World War One. The coloured engraving, created by Richard Caton Woodville and published by the Illustrated London News in 1914, showcases Captain Francis Grenfell leading the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers in an intense battle at Audregnies on August 24th. The action portrayed in this artwork occurred during the Battle of Mons when German infantry forces were closing in on the British 5th Division. Captain Grenfell's bravery and leadership are highlighted as he valiantly fought against overwhelming odds. This event drew comparisons to the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade due to its display of courage but limited impact. In addition to his heroism on the battlefield, Grenfell also played a crucial role later that day. He and his men assisted in rescuing British guns from falling into enemy hands. Woodville skillfully combines these two events within this painting, capturing both moments with great detail and emotion. Although not being awarded first, Captain Francis Grenfell was officially listed as a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his gallantry at Audregnies. Sadly, he met his untimely demise near Ypres on May 24th, 1915. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War One and pays tribute to those who displayed extraordinary valor amidst unimaginable circumstances.
