Reverse
Back turned with a depression for (missing) mirror. The reverse was once described as having a seal with the shield of France under a crown between two angels protected by a hinged ivory cover (Museum object files, no date). Currently on the reverse is a dark green waxy material which forms a near continuous circle around the inner and would have originally covered the whole surface. The adhesive used to adhere the dark green waxy material can be seen in isolated patched on the ivory surface. A later ivory lid has been fitted on the back to cover the recess.); © CSG CIC Glasgow Museums Collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Mirror case (valve de miroir) (ivory)" created by the French School in the 14th century. Displayed at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, Scotland, this delicate piece measures 12.2x12x1.2 cm and is a true testament to medieval artistry. The intricate details of this mirror case depict various scenes from love and courtship, transporting viewers back to a time of chivalry and romance. The God of Love can be seen throwing arrows at lovers, while another image shows him with a majestic hawk perched on his wrist. A sleeping youth, a lady crowning her lover with a chaplet, and couples embracing are just some of the enchanting moments captured within this artwork. Corner terminals adorned with four crouching monsters add an element of mystery and intrigue to the composition. Traces of polychromy and gilding in red along the rim and gold on these monsters further enhance their allure. Turning our attention to its reverse side reveals an interesting history as well. Once described as having a seal featuring France's shield under a crown between two angels protected by an ivory cover, it now bears dark green waxy material covering part of its surface. This remarkable mirror case is not only visually stunning but also serves as a window into medieval culture and customs.
