In John Leech's satirical cartoon from 'Punch', we see Rent Day - The Cellar and Model Lodging-House, where two very different worlds collide. At the top of the image, we see the humble abode of a casual labourer - cramped, squalid, and devoid of any comforts. This is a harsh reminder of the poverty and hardship faced by many urban workers during this time period. On the other hand, at the bottom of the image, we are presented with a model lodging house fit for an artisan - spacious, clean, and well-maintained.
