This photograph captures the momentous occasion of the baptism of Prince Louis Napoleon in the hallowed halls of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, in 1856. The Imperial Prince, held in the arms of his governess to the right of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, is the focus of the image. Surrounding the royal family are various ladies, including sub-governesses and a nurse, all dressed in elegant attire. To the front of the altar, two masters and assistants of ceremonies make their way towards the prie-dieu, making obeisances to the Emperor and Empress before depositing the necessary items for the baptism on the credence tables. The Cardinal Legate then completes the religious ceremony, with the Imperial infant having received the baptismal water.
