EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century oil on canvas portrait depicts Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796. Born as Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst in 1729 in Poland, she rose to power through a strategic marriage to the future Peter III of Russia. In this portrait, painted by the Italian artist Alexandre Roslin, Catherine is shown wearing the regal attire of the Rococo era. Her ermine-trimmed mantle and gown, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and vibrant colors, symbolize her royal heritage and status as the ruler of a vast empire. The orb and crown in her hands further emphasize her authority and power. The painting, which is now housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, is an anonymous work attributed to Roslin, who was a prominent painter of the time. The portrait captures the essence of Catherine's regal presence and her enduring legacy as one of the most influential figures in Russian history.
