EDITORS COMMENTS
Combat Aerien; Guynemer, le visage "effrayant" de Guynemer au moment de l'action" (The Terrifying Face of Guynemer in Combat, 1917) is a captivating photograph that offers a glimpse into the intense and fearless world of a First World War fighter ace. The image, which was published in "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924, depicts Georges Marie Guynemer, a decorated French aviator and fighter pilot, in the heat of battle. Guynemer, who was born on July 24, 1894, in Pouillac, France, quickly rose through the ranks of the French Air Force during the First World War. By the time this photograph was taken, he had already achieved remarkable success as a fighter pilot, with 54 confirmed victories to his name. The photograph captures Guynemer in the cockpit of his Nieuport 17 biplane, his intense focus and determination evident on his face. His eyes are fixed on the horizon, scanning the skies for enemy planes. His expression is one of unwavering concentration, with a hint of fear and determination. The photograph was likely taken during a dogfight, as evidenced by the bulletholes and damage visible on the plane's fuselage. Despite the danger and intensity of his work, Guynemer continued to fly brave and daring missions throughout the war. Tragically, he was killed in action on September 11, 1917, when his plane was hit by enemy fire during a dogfight over the battlefield of Chateau-Thierry. He was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille Militaire, among other honors. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the men and women who served in the armed forces during the First World War. It captures the intensity and danger of air combat during this period, and serves as a testament to the bravery and skill of fighter pilots like Georges Marie Guynemer.
