EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Curtiss Hydroaeroplane, or Flying Boat, exhibited at the House Office Building in 1917. The signage on the plane reads, "Hydro-Aeroplane or Flying Boat for the National Aero Coast Patrol - National Aerial Coast Patrol Commission." At the time, this innovative aircraft was a significant advancement in aviation technology, particularly for maritime patrol and reconnaissance. The Curtiss Hydroaeroplane had logged an impressive 700 hours in the air and had trained 50 aviators for England. Russia, at the time, had 80 similar machines, while the United States had none. The caption also notes that many flying boats of the era were larger than this one. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a prominent photographic studio based in Washington D.C. The studio was founded by George Harris and his wife, Martha Ewing Harris, in 1912. The black and white glass negative image showcases the plane's sleek design, with its biplane wings and seaplane hull. The men in the background add a sense of scale and context to the image. The Curtiss Hydroaeroplane was a vital component of the early 20th century aviation industry, and this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of flight during the First World War era. The image is part of the extensive Harris Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
