EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Design: Academic Figure," is an exquisite example of the artistic and intellectual achievements of the French Enlightenment. Created by the skilled hand of A. J. Defehrt (also known as Aj de Fehrt or AJ Defehrt) around 1762-1777, this anatomical study is a testament to the meticulous detail and precision that characterized the era's academic art. Defehrt's design was originally published in the renowned Encyclopédie, an ambitious project spearheaded by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, which aimed to document all known knowledge at the time. The encyclopedia featured contributions from some of the most brilliant minds of the age, including Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau. The academic figure depicted in this print is a study in human anatomy, likely inspired by the teachings of renowned anatomists of the period such as Andreas Vesalius and William Harvey. The figure is shown in profile, with its muscles and bones meticulously rendered in black and white, etched onto cream laid paper. The intricate lines and shading reveal the complex interplay of form and function that underlies the human body. The print bears the influence of other prominent artists and engravers of the time, including Antoine Claude Briasson, Charles Nicolas Cochin, and Laurent Durand. The overall composition and execution reflect the Encyclopédie's commitment to the interconnectedness of all knowledge, as well as the importance of observation and accuracy in the pursuit of truth. Today, this stunning print is a cherished addition to the collections of many prestigious art institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago. It continues to inspire awe and admiration for the artistic and intellectual achievements of the past, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of human curiosity and ingenuity.
