The Devonport Borough Prison, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Devonport Borough Prison, 1857. This prison is calculated to receive seventy prisoners, and was erected...from the designs and under the superintendence of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect...[It] is provided with a chapel, necessary offices, and warming apparatus and was planned to afford accommodation for 120 additional prisoners in case it should become necessary...The discipline maintained in the prison is the separate system for the promotion of which that portion of the building occupied by prisoners, as well as the laundry, hard-labour pumps, and airing ground, have been laid out. The round tower...is a shaft for ventilating the building. The view, by Mr. R. J. Hallam, is taken from the south, and shows the entrance to the prison with the adjoining officers residences. The builders were Messrs. Hoskyn and Co. of Devonport'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases The Devonport Borough Prison, as it appeared in 1857. The prison, designed by architect J.P. St. Aubyn, was built to house seventy prisoners with the capacity to accommodate an additional 120 inmates if needed. The neo-Gothic structure, with its intricate details and Victorian gothic influences, was erected under St. Aubyn's supervision by Messrs. Hoskyn and Co. of Devonport. The prison complex comprises a chapel, necessary offices, warming apparatus, and a round tower for ventilation. The discipline within the prison followed the separate system, which was promoted through the design of the prisoner quarters, laundry, hard-labour pumps, and airing ground. R.J. Hallam, the skilled engraver, captured this view from the south, providing an excellent perspective of the entrance to the prison and the adjoining officers' residences. The prison's architecture is a testament to the intricacies of the 19th century, with its gothic revival elements and the use of black and white wood engravings to create a striking visual representation. This print was published in the esteemed "Illustrated London News" in 1857, providing a glimpse into the history and design of this once formidable institution.
