EDITORS COMMENTS
Duleep Singh, Sikh ruler, c1890. This lithograph captures the regal presence of Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire. Born in 1838 as the son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, he inherited a kingdom filled with rich history and cultural significance. However, his reign was short-lived as he was deposed by the East India Company in 1855. Forced into exile at a young age, Duleep Singh spent the remainder of his life far from his homeland. In this portrait, we see him adorned in traditional Sikh attire; his majestic bearded face exudes wisdom and strength. The intricate headgear symbolizes his royal lineage and deep connection to Punjab. The vibrant colors used in this lithograph bring to life both Duleep Singh's physical appearance and the opulence associated with royalty during that era. It is evident that Cassell, Petter & Galpin captured not only his external features but also conveyed a sense of reverence for this influential figure. This artwork serves as a powerful reminder of an important chapter in Indian history - one marked by colonialism and its impact on indigenous rulers like Duleep Singh. It stands as a testament to resilience amidst adversity while honoring Sikh culture and religious traditions.
