Entry of Alfonso XII. Into Madrid: Triumphal Arch in the Calle de Alcala, 1876. Creator: Unknown

Entry of Alfonso XII. Into Madrid: Triumphal Arch in the Calle de Alcala, 1876. Inscription: Al Rey Don Alfonso XII; Pacificador de Espana (To King Alfonso XII, Pacifier of Spain). The termination of the Carlist war in Spain was celebrated...by the triumphal entry of King Alfonso XII. into Madrid, upon his return from the late seat of war in the Basque Provinces and Navarre...The President of the Ministry gave up his palace in the Calle Alcala (the finest position in the city) to the diplomatic corps. A procession bearing the words "Unidad Catolica" [Catholic Unity] on its flags was not allowed to enter the Puerta del Sol. This prohibition was much applauded. On the other hand, there were cries of "Down with the privileges of the Basque Provinces'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Entry of Alfonso XII into Madrid in 1876, marking the end of the Carlist war in Spain. The triumphant monarch, King Alfonso XII, rides through the Arch in the Calle de Alcala, which was temporarily vacated for the occasion by the President of the Ministry. The diplomatic corps had previously occupied this prime location in the city. The scene is filled with a sense of celebration and jubilation, as the people of Madrid cheer and wave from the sidelines. The inscription on the arch reads 'Al Rey Don Alfonso XII; Pacificador de Espana' (To King Alfonso XII, Pacifier of Spain). However, not all in the crowd share the same sentiments, as some voices can be heard calling for the abolition of the privileges of the Basque Provinces. The archway, a beautiful architectural feature, stands tall against the backdrop of the city, adorned with flowers and garlands. This engraving was originally published in the Illustrated London News and offers a glimpse into the political and social climate of the time. The image captures the essence of a historic moment in Spanish history, with the monarch's return to Madrid signifying the restoration of peace and unity in the country.
