The eve of Austerlitz, 1 December 1805, (19th century)

The eve of Austerlitz, 1 December 1805, (19th century). Napoleon rests by a fire with his troops camped near Austerlitz (Slavkov u Brna, Czech Republic). Regarded as Napoleon Bonapartes greatest victory, Austerlitz was a sublime trap that destroyed the armies of his enemies Russia and Austria. Tricking his opponents into thinking he was weaker than he actually was, and then calling in nearby reinforcements, Bonaparte initially met the combined Allied army of 85, 000 men and 278 guns with just 66, 000 men. After much hard fighting the French crushed the Allies. Thousands of fleeing troops drowned when a frozen lake split under the weight of men and guns. French losses amounted to 8000 while the Russian and Austrian emperors, present at the battle, saw more than 27, 000 men killed, wounded and captured. Bonaparte also captured 180 cannon

The Eve of Austerlitz, 1 December 1805

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a pivotal moment in history when Napoleon Bonaparte strategically outwitted his enemies. In this print, we see the French Emperor resting by a crackling fire alongside his troops camped near Austerlitz in the Czech Republic. Austerlitz was hailed as Napoleon's greatest victory, and this image symbolizes the calm before the storm. With meticulous planning and cunning deception, Bonaparte lured his opponents into underestimating his strength. As night falls on this fateful eve, he awaits reinforcements while appearing weaker than he truly is. The next day would witness an intense clash between the combined Allied army of Russia and Austria against Napoleon's forces. Despite being outnumbered, the French fought with unwavering determination and skill. The battle ended in a resounding triumph for Bonaparte as thousands of enemy soldiers perished on a frozen lake that gave way under their weight. This wood engraving not only depicts military might but also showcases the human cost of war. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by both sides during this historic conflict. While French losses were significant at 8,000 men, casualties among Russian and Austrian forces numbered over 27,000. As we gaze upon this artwork from the 19th century created by an anonymous artist known simply as Anon, we are transported back to that crucial moment in time when one man's strategic brilliance changed the course of history forever – forever etching Napoleon Bonaparte's name into military legend.
