EDITORS COMMENTS
Fire in the Borgo: A Dramatic Depiction of a Historical Event by Ottaviano Dandini (1726/1750) This artwork, titled "Fire in the Borgo: Slight Sketch of the Fire in the Borgo" (recto and verso), is a masterpiece by the 18th-century Italian artist Ottaviano Dandini. The recto side of the drawing features a dramatic and vivid depiction of the Fire in the Borgo, an event that took place in Rome in 1643. The scene is set against the backdrop of Saint Peter's Basilica, with the flames engulfing the buildings and people in the Borgo area, creating a chaotic and destructive atmosphere. The use of red chalk on ivory laid paper adds depth and texture to the image, bringing the fire to life. On the verso side of the drawing, we find a slightly more restrained sketch of the same scene. Here, the artist employs a lighter touch, using chalk to capture the essential elements of the scene, such as the figures of men and women trying to escape the flames, and the smoke rising from the burning buildings. Dandini's skillful use of color and composition in this artwork highlights the intensity of the historical event, while also capturing the human element of fear and desperation. The artwork is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Italy and the enduring influence of artists like Raphael, whose works continue to inspire and captivate audiences to this day. This beautiful artwork is now part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it is displayed for visitors to appreciate and learn from the historical and cultural significance of this important piece of art.
