God of Thunder (Raijin), mid-1600s. Creator: Tawaraya S?tatsu (Japanese, died c. 1640)

God of Thunder (Raijin), mid-1600s. Such depictions of the God of Thunder originated in Buddhist art. Here, the image was painted on paper covered with gold dust, a technique often found in paintings by Tawaraya Sotatsu or of the Sotatsu school. This gold technique and the " Inen" seal here suggest that the anonymous painter of this screen was probably associated with the Sotatsu workshop. The artist used a prototype borrowed from earlier Japanese narrative painting--rather than mechanically reproducing Sotatsus image--and created a bold, innovative image that served the world of play and leisure in early Edo Japan. The theme of " God of Thunder" was often paired with " God of Wind" and has been frequently reinterpreted by generations of Rimpa artists. Unfortunately, the screen God of Wind which would have accompanied this God of Thunder cannot be located

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print showcases the exquisite artwork of "God of Thunder (Raijin)" created by Tawaraya Sōtatsu in the mid-1600s. Originating from Buddhist art, this depiction of the God of Thunder was painted on paper covered with shimmering gold dust, a signature technique often employed by Sōtatsu or artists associated with the Sōtatsu school. The artist skillfully borrowed elements from earlier Japanese narrative painting to create an innovative and bold image that catered to the world of play and leisure during early Edo Japan. The use of gold technique and the presence of the "Inen" seal suggest that this anonymous painter was likely affiliated with the Sōtatsu workshop. Unfortunately, its companion piece, "God of Wind" which would have accompanied this stunning portrayal, is currently missing. Throughout generations, Rimpa artists have frequently reinterpreted these themes together. This six-panel folding screen represents a significant example from the Edo period's heritage art. Its intricate details and masterful brushwork showcase both Tawaraya Sōtatsu's talent as well as his influence on subsequent artists within Japanese culture. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to Japan's rich artistic history and continues to inspire awe in viewers today.
