The HMT Royal Edward - A Tragic Tale of Loss and Sacrifice
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant print captures the ill-fated HMT Royal Edward, a passenger ship that met its tragic end during the First World War. The image, taken around 1915 and later printed in Frank A Mumby's historical volume "The Great World War - A History" serves as a haunting reminder of the devastating consequences of war. Operated by the Canadian Northern Steamship Company, this majestic ocean liner was repurposed as a Hired Military Transport to ferry Commonwealth troops across treacherous waters. However, on that fateful day of August 14th, 1915, disaster struck when a German submarine torpedoed the vessel in the Aegean Sea. Over 1000 lives were lost in this heart-wrenching event. The photograph showcases both the grandeur and vulnerability of this once-majestic ship. Its towering presence against an expansive backdrop of water symbolizes human ambition and progress amidst turbulent times. Yet, it also serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly invincible structures can succumb to destruction at any moment. As we gaze upon this historic relic captured by an unknown creator, let us honor those who perished aboard the HMT Royal Edward – brave souls who made unimaginable sacrifices for their countries during one of history's darkest chapters.
