Holy Family on the Flight into Egypt, 1809. Creator: Dominique Vivant Denon (French, 1747-1825)

Holy Family on the Flight into Egypt, 1809. Lithography was discovered in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder (1771-1834), whose efforts to find an inexpensive method to reproduce the text of his plays accidentally led to a new and revolutionary way of printing. Although lithographs were almost immediately produced in Germany and England, the artists of France were the first to appreciate the aesthetic potentialities of this most flexible, responsive, and personal medium. In 1806, one of Napoleons generals, Baron Lejeune, an amateur painter, was impressed by the technique while in Munich. Upon his return to Paris, he succeeded in introducing a few artists to the method, and by 1811 Denons studio had become a fashionable center of lithography for amateurs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Holy Family on the Flight into Egypt" was created in 1809 by Dominique Vivant Denon, a renowned French artist. Lithography, a revolutionary printing technique discovered in Germany by Alois Senefelder in 1798, allowed for the reproduction of text and images with unparalleled precision and artistic potential. While lithographs were quickly adopted in Germany and England, it was the artists of France who truly embraced this flexible and personal medium. In 1806, Baron Lejeune, one of Napoleon's generals and an amateur painter himself, witnessed the technique's remarkable capabilities during his visit to Munich. Inspired by what he saw, Lejeune introduced several artists to lithography upon his return to Paris. By 1811, Denon's studio had become a fashionable hub for amateurs seeking to explore this new art form. The Holy Family on the Flight into Egypt exemplifies Denon's mastery of lithography as he beautifully captures the sacred scene with intricate details and delicate lines. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art today as part of their heritage collection from Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any commercial entity), this print serves as a testament to both Denon's skill as an artist and the transformative power of lithography during the early 19th century.
