EDITORS COMMENTS
Match Safe, c. 1940 Artist: Julius Bellamy (1892-1975) Description: This graphite on paper drawing by American artist Julius Bellamy depicts a match safe from the 1930s to 1940s. The match safe, a functional and decorative container designed to hold matches, is shown in its entirety in the image. The match safe is made of metal and features an ornate, geometric design with a prominent trademark symbol in the center. The intricate pattern is reminiscent of the Art Deco style popular during the 1920s and 1930s, but the design also incorporates elements of the 19th century, such as the use of graphite on paper. The match safe is a testament to the artist's ability to capture the essence of an everyday object and elevate it to the realm of art. Background: Julius Bellamy was an American artist known for his drawings of everyday objects. His work was included in the Index of American Design, a project initiated by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to document American decorative arts and crafts. Bellamy's drawings were also exhibited at various art galleries and museums in the United States, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This match safe drawing is a prime example of Bellamy's ability to capture the beauty and intrigue of seemingly mundane objects, making them the focus of artistic attention. Location: This drawing is part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., USA. It is a valuable addition to the gallery's holdings of American art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
