Moscow on fire, 15th September 1812 (1882-1884). Artist: A Etienne

Moscow on fire, 15th September 1812 (1882-1884). After the indecisive but bloody Battle of Borodino, the Russians abandoned Moscow to Napoleon and the French invaders, setting fire to stores of food before they left. The French occupied and looted the city which, consisting mainly of wooden buildings, was largely destroyed by fire. Hoping for a Russian surrender, Napoleon waited in Moscow for five weeks, but with no capitulation forthcoming, short of food and menaced by Russian manouevres outside the city, he began in mid-October what would become an epic retreat. When the Grande Armee finally crossed the Niemen out of Russian territory on 7th December only 20, 000 men out of the original force of over 600, 000 remained. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Moscow on fire, 15th September 1812" captures a pivotal moment in history during the Napoleonic Wars. After the Battle of Borodino, where both sides suffered heavy casualties, the Russians made a strategic decision to abandon Moscow and set it ablaze before retreating. This act of defiance left Napoleon and his French army stunned as they occupied and looted the city. The image depicts the devastating aftermath of this destructive event. The once vibrant city now lies in ruins, with buildings engulfed in flames and billowing smoke filling the air. Amidst this chaos, we see soldiers scattered throughout, their presence highlighting both the scale of destruction and human suffering caused by war. Napoleon had hoped for a Russian surrender but was met with resistance instead. As weeks passed without any sign of capitulation from Russia and faced with dwindling supplies, Napoleon was forced to make one of history's most infamous retreats - an arduous journey that would decimate his once-mighty Grande Armee. This haunting black-and-white engraving by A Etienne serves as a stark reminder of the consequences brought upon by invasion and conflict. It encapsulates not only the physical devastation but also symbolizes the futility and costliness of war itself. The image stands as a testament to human resilience amidst adversity while serving as a cautionary tale against aggression and its dire repercussions.
