EDITORS COMMENTS
This remarkable woodcut print by Michael Wolgemut, created in Germany during the fifteenth century, showcases two significant biblical stories from the Old Testament on either side of a single sheet. On the recto, or right side, we find the story of Moses Found by Pharaoh's Daughter. The scene depicts Pharaoh's daughter reaching out to rescue the infant Moses from the river Nile, where he had been placed by his mother to ensure his survival. The baby gazes up at her with an expression of wonder and curiosity, while Pharaoh's daughter looks down at him with a protective and caring gaze. The geographical feature of the Nile estuary provides a striking backdrop to this heartwarming moment. On the verso, or left side, the woodcut illustrates the story of Judas's Betrayal. Here, we see Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, in the act of betraying Jesus Christ with a kiss. The three figures in this scene are easily distinguishable - Judas, identified by the moneybag hanging from his belt, Jesus, with his characteristic halo and long beard, and a soldier, likely representing the Roman guard. The stark contrast between the innocence of the Moses story and the betrayal and deceit of the Judas story adds depth and complexity to this intriguing work of art. This woodcut print, known as Moses Found by Pharaoh's Daughter (recto) and Judas's Betrayal (verso), is part of the Schatzbehalter, or Treasury, published by Pater Stephan and Fridolin Stepahn in 1491. The print, which measures approximately 17.4 x 12.7 cm, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Gothic period and the enduring power of biblical stories to captivate and inspire.
