The New Houses of Parliament: The Peers Staircase, 1857. Creator: Unknown

The New Houses of Parliament: The Peers Staircase, 1857. This is an elegant approach to the Upper House, having two flights of steps...The ceiling is divided into nine parts, supported by four piers, upon which are rendered pillars, and deeply-recessed mouldings; from the pillars spring the fan groinings of the roof, at whose intersections are some small bosses and shields, all of which are gilded...It is lighted by two large windows, of five lights each, with rich bold tracery...The side wall is divided, like the windows, into five compartments, in each of which upon gold grounds are emblazoned arms, corresponding with the windows. The floor is of encaustic tiles, in lozenge forms, and varied in pattern. The rise of the steps is also fronted with tiles. The balustrade which surrounds the top of the staircase is divided into compartments, and filled with roses and quatrefoils of very bold design'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Peers' Staircase in The New Houses of Parliament, captured in this 1857 photograph, offers a breathtaking glimpse into the grandeur of British political history. The staircase, an elegant approach to the Upper House, boasts two flights of steps leading to the ornate ceiling, which is divided into nine parts, each supported by four intricately detailed piers. The fan groinings of the roof are adorned with small bosses and shields, all gilded for added opulence. Natural light floods the space through two large windows, each with five lights and rich, bold tracery. The side wall mirrors the windows, with five compartments displaying emblazoned arms corresponding to each window. The floor is a stunning mosaic of encaustic tiles in lozenge forms, adding a textured contrast to the polished staircase. The balustrade at the top of the staircase is equally impressive, with compartments filled with roses and quatrefoils of bold design. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, offers a glimpse into the intricate details and grandeur of the newly constructed Houses of Parliament. The image captures the essence of Victorian-era design and the significance of the Peers' Staircase as a symbol of power and prestige in British politics.
