EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the mid-19th century, showcasing the architectural marvel that was the New Hungerford Market in London. Designed by Charles Fowler, who also created Covent Garden Market, this Italianate-style building stood proudly near Charing Cross. The image captures its grandeur and elegance, with intricate details adorning its exterior. However, history took a toll on this magnificent market when tragedy struck in 1854. Adjacent to it, Hungerford Hall burned down, causing severe damage to the market itself. Eventually, in 1862, the site was sold to the South Eastern Railway and made way for the construction of Charing Cross Station. The photograph not only showcases this iconic structure but also provides glimpses of life along the River Thames. Boats can be seen dotting its waters as they transport goods and people from one point to another. The bustling street adjacent to the riverbank adds a sense of liveliness and activity. Captured through an engraving technique by Payne under William Tombleson's direction, this monochrome print beautifully encapsulates a significant moment in London's history. It serves as a reminder of how architecture shapes cities over time while highlighting trade and transportation as vital aspects of urban life during that era.
