New Music-Hall, Evan's Hotel, Covent-Garden, 1856. The new Hall has been built from the designs of Mr. William Finch Hill...Great brilliancy of effect is produced...by ten rich cut-glass gaseliers, or lustres for gas, eight of which have ten lights each, and two over the orchestra fifteen lights each; the entire number of gaslights being 120...The glass gaseliers...were designed and manufactured by Messrs. Defries and Sons...they are hung at such a height as to diffuse an abundant flood of light without fatigue to the eye...Around the sides of the room...are richly-ornamented open plates for the admission of fresh warm air, the vitiated being driven through the pierced panels in the ceiling, and thence through the louvres in the roof. The columns...are of Bath stone, fluted with wreathed Ionic caps...Over each of the eight pilasters there are figures...representing Poetry, Drama, Music, &c'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
New Music-Hall at Evan's Hotel, Covent-Garden, 1856: A Beacon of Entertainment and Innovation This photograph from 1856 showcases the grandeur of the newly built New Music-Hall at Evan's Hotel in Covent Garden. Designed by the esteemed architect William Finch Hill, this architectural marvel was a testament to the Victorian era's love for opulence and innovation. The hall's most striking feature is the ten richly-decorated cut-glass gaseliers, or chandeliers, designed and manufactured by Messrs. Defries and Sons. With a total of 120 gaslights, they illuminated the space with a brilliant effect, providing ample light without causing eye strain. The glass chandeliers were suspended at an optimal height, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The sides of the room were adorned with richly-ornamented open plates, allowing for the admission of fresh warm air. The stale air was vented through the pierced panels in the ceiling and thence through the louvres in the roof, ensuring a constant flow of fresh air for the comfort of the patrons. The columns, made of Bath stone and fluted with wreathed Ionic caps, added to the grandeur of the hall. Above each of the eight pilasters, figures representing Poetry, Drama, Music, and other arts graced the space, symbolizing the connection between the arts and the entertainment provided at the New Music-Hall. The Illustrated London News, in its 1856 issue, described the New Music-Hall as a beacon of brilliance and innovation, setting a new standard for entertainment venues in London. This photograph is a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse of the grandeur and elegance that once defined Covent Garden's entertainment scene.
