EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-carved ivory sculpture, titled "Pan Pursuing Syrinx," dates back to the 1690s and was created by the renowned German artist Ignaz Elhafen. The sculpture is a stunning representation of a scene from Greek mythology, depicting the god Pan in hot pursuit of the nymph Syrinx. Pan, the god of the wild, shepherds, and flocks, is shown in his most primal form, with the horns on his head, pointed ears, and nimble, agile body. He is fully nude, his muscles taut with the intensity of his pursuit. His face is contorted with desire and longing, his eyes fixed on Syrinx, who is depicted as a graceful, slender figure, her arms raised in a defensive gesture as she attempts to escape. Syrinx, a nymph famed for her beauty and her enchanting voice, is shown in her most vulnerable moment. She is fully clothed, with long, flowing hair, and her face is a picture of fear and determination. The intricately carved details of her dress and hair add to the overall beauty and elegance of the sculpture. The concept of this sculpture is rooted in Greek mythology, where Pan, smitten by Syrinx's beauty, chased her relentlessly. In an attempt to escape, Syrinx prayed to the gods to save her, and they transformed her into a reed, from which the sound of her voice could still be heard. Pan, in his frustration, took the reeds and fashioned them into a pan-pipes, which he played in her memory. This sculpture, with its intricate carving and vivid colors, is a testament to the artistic heritage of Europe in the seventeenth century. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), a location that continues to preserve and showcase the rich cultural history of the continent.
