The Phoros Gate, before Sebastopol - sketched by J. A. Crowe, 1856. Creator: J. A. Crowe

The Phoros Gate, before Sebastopol - sketched by J. A. Crowe, 1856. British soldiers in the Crimea:sketched by our Special Correspondent and Artist...[showing] the gate of the Phoros [or Foros] Pass, in advance of Baidar'. The Baydar Gate (elevation 503 metres or 1, 650 feet) is a mountain pass in the Crimean Mountains connecting the Baidar Valley with the Black Sea coast. It is enclosed by Mount Chelebi and Mount Ckhu-Bair. The old Yalta-Sevastopol highway, dating from the 1830s and seldom used today, passes through here. When the highway was completed in 1848, the so-called Propylaea were built of local limestone to commemorate the event. This Neoclassical gate offers scenic views, including that of the picturesque Foros Church set atop a 400-metre cliff overlooking the sea coast. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the breathtaking scene of The Phoros Gate, or Foros Pass, as sketched by J. A. Crowe in 1856. The image was published in the esteemed Illustrated London News, with the caption "British soldiers in the Crimea: sketched by our Special Correspondent and Artist...[showing] the gate of the Phoros Pass, in advance of Baidar." Located in the Crimean Mountains, the Phoros Pass is a mountain pass connecting the Baidar Valley with the Black Sea coast. The pass, which stands at an elevation of 503 metres or 1,650 feet, is enclosed by Mount Chelebi and Mount Ckhu-Bair. The old Yalta-Sevastopol highway, completed in 1848, passes through the gate, and the Neoclassical Propylaea were built of local limestone to commemorate the event. The print offers a glimpse into the past, with British soldiers making their way through the gate, surrounded by horses and cavalrymen. The Neoclassical gate offers scenic views, including that of the picturesque Foros Church, which is set atop a 400-metre cliff overlooking the sea coast. The print, created by J. A. Crowe, provides a unique perspective of the Crimean War, a significant historical event in the 19th century. The image is a testament to the artistic skill of Crowe, who captured the rugged terrain, the grandeur of the gate, and the determination of the soldiers in this sketch.
