Photographs of a Standing Male Nude Model ( Joseph Smith ), c. 1883. Creator

Photographs of a Standing Male Nude Model (" Joseph Smith" ), c. 1883. Eakinss earliest use of photography was as a visual aid to painting. In the early 1880s, he began photographic experiments that would allow him to create a more accurate and convincing rendering of anatomy and the human form in motion. Recognizing the assistance these visual reminders could provide the artist, Eakins and his circle began photographing a series of nude forms modeled by men, women, and children. These images, which he called the Naked Series, consist of seven contact-printed photographs mounted on cardboard strips. They show the models from the front, side, and rear posed in contrapposto positions or with their weight equally distributed. Eakinss other photographic endeavors included a series on the figure in motion--photographs that were clearly used as studies for paintings--and more traditional portraits and figural groupings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Photographs of a Standing Male Nude Model (Joseph Smith), c. 1883" offers a glimpse into the artistic experimentation of renowned American painter Thomas Eakins. In his early forays into photography, Eakins recognized its potential as a visual aid to enhance his paintings' accuracy and lifelike portrayal of anatomy and human movement. The photograph is part of Eakins' Naked Series, an exploration that involved capturing various nude forms posed in contrapposto positions or with balanced weight distribution. This particular image showcases Joseph Smith, who confidently stands before the camera lens, embodying strength and grace simultaneously. Mounted on sturdy cardboard strips are seven contact-printed photographs that reveal the model from different angles - front, side, and rear. Each frame serves as a visual reminder for Eakins during his painting process. Beyond this series dedicated to studying the human form's intricacies, Eakins also delved into motion studies through photography. These images were undoubtedly utilized as references for future paintings. Additionally, he ventured into more traditional portraiture and figural groupings throughout his photographic endeavors. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print not only captures Joseph Smith's physicality but also provides us with insight into Thomas Eakins' innovative approach to art-making during the late 19th century.
