EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph captured by Harris & Ewing on April 28, 1909, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, Major of France, stands solemnly before his newly dedicated tomb and memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. L'Enfant, a French-American military engineer, is best known for designing the basic plan for Washington, D.C. After his death in poverty in 1825, he was originally buried at the Green Hill farm in Chillum, Prince George's County, Maryland. However, due to the efforts of the French ambassador to the United States, L'Enfant was eventually re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to his significant contribution to the development of the nation's capital. In this image, L'Enfant, dressed in military uniform, is surrounded by a group of men, including George W. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze, who were instrumental in the dedication ceremony. The American flag, proudly displayed, adds to the ceremonial atmosphere, while the mausoleum and flags in the background serve as a poignant reminder of the solemn occasion. This photograph, taken in black and white, is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress. It is a testament to the rich history of Arlington National Cemetery and the important figures who have been laid to rest there. The image also highlights the role of Harris & Ewing in documenting significant events in American history.
