EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait, titled "Portrait of Monsieur Nelys in Profile," was created by the renowned French artist and diplomat, Baron Vivant Denon, in 1817. The black and white lithograph on cream laid paper captures the distinguished profile of a man identified as Monsieur Nelys. Denon, known for his expertise in the arts, produced this lithograph during the 19th century when the medium was gaining popularity. The subject wears a formal coat with a high collar, typical of the fashion of the time. The intricate details of the clothing and the man's facial features are beautifully rendered in the lithotint technique, which involved drawing on a limestone plate with a greasy crayon or pen and then inking and printing the image in reverse. The portrait exudes an air of elegance and refinement, transporting us back to the country estates and grand salons of France. This work of art is now part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and delight visitors from around the world.
