Prinsep's Ghaut, Calcutta, from a sketch by of our special artists, 1876. Creator: Unknown

Prinsep's Ghaut, Calcutta, from a sketch by of our special artists, 1876. Crowds turn out to welcome the future King Edward VII. A ghaut is a Hindostanee word now used to signify a landing-place...It has for ages been regarded as a work of merit on the part of a benevolent native to construct a flight of steps down to the edge of a stream to facilitate embarkation and disembarkation, and to erect at the top of the steps a covered structure for the shelter from the sun of the frequenters of the ghaut. The native example has been followed in the case of Prinsep's Ghaut, which was erected by public subscription to commemorate the name of James Prinsep, one of the principal citizens...an admirable spot for the Prince [of Wales]'s landing-place. It is spacious, and, with a magnificent flight of steps on the river's front, was a fitting structure, with its fine columns, for the reception of the Royal guest'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Prinsep's Ghaut, Calcutta, 1876: A Warm Welcome for the Future King Edward VII This evocative sketch captures the bustling scene at Prinsep's Ghaut in Calcutta, India, as the crowds eagerly await the arrival of the future King Edward VII. The ghaut, a Hindustani term for a landing place, is depicted here with its grand flight of steps leading down to the river's edge and a covered shelter at the top. A ghaut was traditionally constructed as a benevolent act by native rulers to facilitate easy access to waterways for travelers. The ghaut at Prinsep's Ghaut was erected in 1847 through public subscription, as a tribute to James Prinsep, a prominent British citizen of Calcutta. The site's spaciousness and magnificent architecture, including fine columns, made it an ideal location for the reception of the royal guest. The anticipation in the air is palpable as the people of Calcutta gather to welcome the future monarch. The scene is a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place between India and Britain during the colonial era. The ghaut's unique blend of Indian and European architectural influences reflects the synergy between the two civilizations, making it an admirable spot for the Prince of Wales' landing-place. This sketch, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to witness the grandeur and excitement of a regal arrival in colonial India.
