Rowing Home the Schoof-Stuff (from Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, 1886
Rowing Home the Schoof-Stuff (from Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, 1886, plate XXI), 1886. Reacting against the theatrical, sentimental photogaphs made by his contemporaries, Peter Henry Emerson pursued a direct and more naturalistic form of photography. He discovered his subjects in familiar scenes from everyday life and captured them on film. This image was included among the 40 prints illustrating Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, one of many books Emerson published on the marsh dwellers of East Anglia. In this photograph the word " schoof" refers to the sheaf of marsh plants that have been harvested to be dried and stored at home

EDITORS COMMENTS
The photograph titled "Rowing Home the Schoof-Stuff" captures a moment of everyday life on the Norfolk Broads in 1886. Taken by Peter Henry Emerson, this image is part of his larger body of work that sought to break away from the staged and sentimental photography popular at the time. Emerson's approach was more naturalistic, focusing on familiar scenes and people he encountered in his daily life. In this particular print, we see a group of marsh dwellers rowing their boat back home with a sheaf of harvested marsh plants known as "schoof". These plants would be dried and stored for later use. Included among the 40 prints illustrating Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, this photograph offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of these East Anglian residents. Emerson's dedication to capturing authentic moments shines through in his composition and attention to detail. The platinum print technique used adds depth and richness to the image, enhancing its timeless quality. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print serves as a testament to both Emerson's artistic vision and the cultural heritage of British marshland communities. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this photograph invites viewers to reflect upon a bygone era while appreciating Emerson's contribution to photographic artistry.
