EDITORS COMMENTS
This folio from a Ragamala (Garland of Melodies) painting, created in the 1770s, showcases the enchanting figure of Sindhu Ragaputra, the Son of Shri Raga. The unknown artist masterfully employed opaque watercolor and gold on paper to bring this regal character to life. Sindhu Ragaputra is depicted as a prince, dressed in rich, colorful attire, holding a variety of musical instruments. He plays the mridangam, a large double-headed drum, with one hand, while skillfully wielding a pair of hand cymbals, manjiras, in the other. A fly whisk, or fan, is delicately held in his left hand, adding an air of royalty and leisure to the scene. Surrounding him is a curious group of attendants, some playing instruments such as the mridangam and the drum, while others are inquisitive, with hands raised in wonder. The setting is a raised platform, adorned with intricate designs and a pink rose, adding a touch of elegance to the composition. This artwork originates from the rich cultural heritage of India, specifically from the region of Rajasthan in South East Asia. The Ragamala tradition is a significant aspect of Hindustani classical music, with each painting representing a raga, or melody, and its associated emotional qualities. This folio from the 18th century is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's extensive collection, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of this artistic tradition.
