St. Clare, Isle of Wight, 1862. Creator: Mason Jackson

St. Clare, Isle of Wight, 1862. After the marriage of Princess Alice with Prince Louis of Hesse the Royal bride and bridegroom retired to St. Clare, at Spring Vale, the residence of Colonel and Lady Katherine Vernon Harcourt...[It was] selected by the Queen for the honeymoon of the Prince and Princess... on account of [its] beautiful situation... The Tudor style of Gothic predominates in this castellated mansion, the grounds of which are laid out in the most approved modern style. A view of no common beauty from the keep-tower completes the attraction of this delightful seat...The stay of their Royal Highnesses was brief at St. Clare, as on Friday last they returned to Osborne. It is stated that the Prince and Princess intend to reside at Frogmore, and Clarence House, St. James's, which the Queen has placed at their disposal'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Clare, Isle of Wight, 1862: A Royal Honeymoon Retreat This evocative photograph, captured by Mason Jackson in 1862, showcases the picturesque St. Clare mansion on the Isle of Wight, England. The image was published in the Illustrated London News following the honeymoon stay of Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine, and her husband, Prince Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine. The newlyweds retired to St. Clare, Spring Vale, the residence of Colonel and Lady Katherine Vernon Harcourt, after their marriage. The location was selected by Queen Victoria due to its beautiful situation and the Tudor-style Gothic architecture that predominates in this castellated mansion. The grounds, laid out in the most approved modern style, add to the attraction of this delightful seat. The view from the keep-tower completes the beauty of this country house, which boasts a rich history and an elegant design. The stay of their Royal Highnesses at St. Clare was brief, as they returned to Osborne after a short while. It is believed that the Prince and Princess intended to reside at Frogmore and Clarence House in St. James's, which the Queen had placed at their disposal. This engraved photograph, with its focus on the exterior of the mansion and its surroundings, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the elegance and grandeur of the 19th century. The Tudor-style architecture, fortifications, and beautiful landscape make St. Clare a truly captivating and unforgettable sight.
