EDITORS COMMENTS
The Stanley Monument in Chelsea Old Church, restored in 1858, is a stunning example of funerary art from the 17th century. Located at the east end of the chapel in the Old Church of St. Luke, this alabaster altar tomb stands at an impressive height of 12 feet and is 7 feet 3 inches long. The central urn, topped with an eagle, holds an alto-relief portrait of Sir Robert Stanley, the second son of William Earl of Derby, who passed away on January 3, 1632. Two smaller urns, each surmounted by gilded flames, are placed on either side of the central urn. The square bases of these urns bear portraits of Sir Robert's children, Ferdinando Stanley and Henarite Marie Stanley. Justice, represented by a figure holding a sword and an emblazoned flag, is depicted between the central urn and the one on the left. On the right side of the central urn, Fortitude, with a crown and an emblazoned shield, is shown. The black marble slab that forms the base of the monument is inscribed with the following text: "To the lasting memory of two of his children that is to say Ferdinando Stanley his sonne and Henarite Marie [Henrietta Maria] Stanley his daughter who lie buried within this his sepulcher." The Lady Elizabeth Stanley, Sir Robert's widow, and her descendants resided at Stanley House, Chelsea, until 1691. The monument lay neglected for centuries until it was restored in 1858 by the Earl of Derby. This photograph, taken during the restoration process, captures the intricate details and beauty of this historic monument, providing a glimpse into the rich history of the Old Church of St. Luke and the Stanley family.
